Lysias, On the Olive Stump, VII.30ff

So I beg you not to consider such words/claims to be more credible than the facts,

and not about things which you yourselves know very well, which you should hold up more than the words of my enemies.

taking to heart both what I have said and the rest of my conduct as a citizen.

For I have completed all of my civic duties more assiduously

than as required by the city,

serving as trierarch and paying the war property tax

and defraying the cost of the chorus and the other liturgies

not one of the citizens besting (my) munificence.

And if doing these things moderately, but not strenuously

I would not be, neither about exile nor about the rest of my property, struggling,

and I would have acquired more, wronging no one and not endangering my life:

but doing this, which this fellow accuses me of,

gaining not one bit,

while putting myself in danger.

And indeed all of you might agree more just it is, to use those great proofs about great things,

and more credible to consider, that which the entire city witnessed,

rather than that which only this one accuses me of.

And furthermore, gentlemen, consider in another light.

For I went to him, with witnesses,

saying that I still have all the slaves,

who I owned since taking over the estate,

and was ready,

if he wanted any one,

to offer for torture,

believing thus might the strongest proof/test be

of his words and my deeds.

but he did not wish,
