The three curving rows of bricks indicate an original segmental arch window. When this wall was renovated, a cheaper, shorter, rectangular window replaced it, and they bricked up the gap. (More on brick arch windows here.) This is my favorite thing to observe in the Bronx, or in any old city: the re-use and alteration of older stuff.
