Near the Throg’s Neck Bridge, along the waterfront, lies the fairly affluent Country Club neighborhood of the Bronx. Beautiful views of Long Island Sound.

City Island and Long Island

City Island and Long Island

A confusing or deceiving view. From this spot, I knew that I was looking out onto Long Island Sound, with the Bronx, Westchester, and Connecticut on my left, the Sound, and then Long Island on the right. But there was no visible break; it appeared to be an unbroken ring of land all around the immediate harbor. Finally a local explained that, yes, City Island blends right into Long Island, and the gap between them is practically unnoticeable.

Brant in the Bronx

Brant in the Bronx

Brant! They resemble Canada Geese, but they are not. And, while I’m on the topic of geese, don’t ever say “Canadian Geese,” especially if it’s a Brant. The name of that other, widely abundant bird is “Canada Goose.” Now pass me some of that Canadian Dry Ginger Ale, so I can mix it with my Canada Club Whisky.
